Books for High School Students

I'm looking for interesting books to study with my students. I teach American Literature and I'm finding the old standbys are getting old. I use The Great Gatsby, The Chosen, Slaughterhouse Five, Fahrenheit 451. Any suggestions?

I recommend the Kite Runner, a recent "Everybody Reads" book at the local library. Everyone I know that has read it has enjoyed it a lot.

I also read Will's blog and wanted you to know, we are out here. There are a lot of us gaining professional development personally from reading what other wonderfully skilled educators are doing elsewhere. Keep the faith. There is nothing like seeing your first comment come in, but SIX MINUTES? Has to be a record.

I really enjoyed teaching The Color Purple when I taught American Women Writers at an all girl private high school many years ago. It might present some interesting opportunities (do I hear field trip to NYC and the stage production of The Color Purple?) Thanks for the input!
