WIKI MADNESS!

Hello! You all have done a great job getting up and running with your personal wikis. I want you to think about the other ways wikis could be used in the classroom. Give it some thought and post a response to this posting by Wednesday 9/20/06.

Hey, I'm finally the first person to comment on the blog. (Except for this "money maker" over there) Well this whole wiki thing was kind of frustrating at first because I couldn't get it to work. But of course, the amazing Mrs. Hannon came to the rescue and helped me. By using wiki I think that it could be a fun way to teach eachother. I mean like the students teach the students. Giving you a break. I think that in a couple of years, every class will be using wiki's and blog's to learn the material needed to be learned.

See Mrs. Hannon i should of read that book i gave you it talked all about how to use wikies in the classroom in it. Well, so far iv enjoyed these wikis,i find them quite fun, but sometiems they do get a bit confusing. My ideas for classroom use of the wikies would be to show our school off in them, tell people what we, ourselvs, and our school is all about. Now we know we cant get personal with them because they are open to everyone to see, maybe some ideas could be on current events also. Each week make a page that has to do with something you find intresting in society that week for ex: the upcomeing visit of the Dalai Lama, who im going to see, maybe make a page describeing the experance and includeing pictures. Those are some of my ideas i hope we can incorporate them into our classroom.

Since we can't go to many sites in the classroom, what we do to are wiki has limitations. Such as editing it using certain websites. So by knowing this i dont think there are many other ways we could use are wiki in the classroom. So far everything we've done with are wikis has been done outside of school. We didn't even create them in school. If its possible, i do think it would be nice to include something about the senior class on the wikis, and have pictures of everyone.

Hey there Mrs. Hannon. Using the Wiki's at first was really hard for me because the computer that I use at home is extremely old and slow. It makes me want to throw it out the window. But now that it's all set up and I'm putting things on it, I like it. I think it is going to be a very good learning experience for everyone and I think they should be used a lot more within the classrooms. This is much better than taking notes or having little discussions in a classroom.

Mrs. Hannon-Drayton,

I'm really not too sure how else we can use the wikis in the classroom, so I can't give any advice. I made $0 dollars last month having no fun at all. I hope that I am doing a good job spelling correctly.

Mrs. Hannon, I think you should partake in that person's fine business venture. It would put a lot of money in your pocket that the Buffalo Public School System will not give you...

Anyway.

Maybe in regards to wikis we could post notes for classes (not just English V). In case our classmates miss a class, they don't have to get behind in their studies. We could also post assignments that are for homework for the same reasons. If some teachers wanted to, they could get wikis and blogs and we could post our homework assignments. If we weren't in school we could still get the assignment in on time.

hey!!! The whole wiki thing drove me insane because my step dad had to reboot our whole computer in order for me to just set one up. But now that I have one I am so excited to use it. Its kind of cool.I believe that in a couple of years school will be taught through wiki in blogging... and that would be awesome!!!!!!

Hey Ms. Hannon, I think that we could use it to help one another learn and understand the ins and outs of the computer. If we put more thought to this class, years from now everyone would be taking this class. Teachers could use it as well to post homework, possible place notes on-line, and help the students with things they couldn't understand in class. This website could make class time of teaching shorter because it'll all be posted online.

Hello Mrs Hannon. I finally got this wiki thing, almost. I think by using a wiki we can open a new door for both teachers and students. Wikis is a participating way of learning. By taking this class it teaches you to be responsible and its preparing you for college. Classes could be taught through this method. As far as notes and homework. Wikis allow you to be creative and show another side of you.

Hey there lovely teacher/ students,
Wikis are amazing. They make me giggle inside as well as on the outside. I believe we as a class should continue to help each other out to make creating and editing wikis much less confusing for people. I also think we should continue to explore our editing options to help personalize our Wikis. I agree with Peter when he says we should put our wikis out there for people to see. By allowing others to view our wikis we are not only benefiting ourselves, but we may also be introducing other people to a new program which could, in the end help them as well!

Wikis can be used as a form of communication between teacher and student. We can use our wikis for assignments given to us such as, essays, journals, etc.. We can also use our wikis as communication between each other. Things such as deadlines for important dates can be posted for people who spend alot of time on the internet.

Mrs Hannon,
First, I think this class is a wonderfull idea, it is a great way to stay current with all the new technology. I think it is really cool that we are learning as we go along, you as well!! Wikis are a great opprotunity for teachers to post notes and class assingments online. It may be a graeat resource to beat the "older then dirt" text book issue. Poriving likns to educational sites will allow students to recieve up to date info. Wiki's are just a great way to expand learning above and beyond the claasroom!

Hi Mrs. Hannon
Im not to fond of the whole wiki thing yet,I know it took me a while to really get into doing my myspace. The class could be a good way for students to interact and help each other along with the teachers help. I got my wiki setup perfectly find. The wiki pages really allows us to have access to a lot of different information and resources, unlike sitting in the class and reading from old textbooks.

Dear Mrs. Hannon,

I think the Wiki's are working out wonderfully so far. It's quite an experience and everyone is learning. I looked at your blog the other day and I didn't have an answer to this question yet but I have been continuously thinking about it. I thought that it would be a good idea if other teachers got into this Wiki thing. The teachers could post different links on their wiki's to maybe help out or go along with what they are teaching at that point in time. I think that it would be a cool experience if the teacher would post on their wiki what we are doing on different days or what we have to bring for that class on that day. They could also post the work on their wiki, if your absent you know what you have to make up and you could be all set for the next day without making it a hassle and asking people for their notes.

Hi Mrs. Hannon
I'm really enjoying using the Wikis so far. Html coding isn't hard to get the hang of, and there's so much stuff you can do with it.
I think it'd be a great idea to have all students take this course. Some people are still computer-illiterate in this day and age, which is unfortunate, since with such advanced technology today it seems as though we will all be using computers full-time soon. It's good to have a class like this, teaching people how to use computers properly.

Hi Mrs.Hannon,
In my opinion I think that wiki's could be used for communication among students and teachers. Such as sending messages and posting comments to each other. Not only between the teacher and the students but between the students themselves. The students could learn more about each other due to the fact that the wiki's are showing what type of personality they have.

Hey Mrs.Hannon,
At first I was having some difficulties with my wiki but know i'm having some help from Ruth. I am starting to like doing this in our class and it is something many of us enjoy doing. I think that the wiki's could also be used to give dates of all the important senior meetings and events. As well as we can make a small slide show with pictures of all the students and teachers in the senior class. After all the seniors are the ones working on the wiki's.

My thoughts about the possible uses of a wiki are many. You can use a wiki for information about your self to share with others. You can also use a wiki for educational purposes like listing assingments and posting website links. You can also use a wiki for posting pictures and sharing events that people want to know about.

Hi Mrs. Hannon ,
I think wikis can be used to do many things. They can be used to share information with people and student or teachers. Wikis can also be used to create links to helpful websites for school subjects. You can also use a wiki to get school work done.

Mrs. Hannon,

I believe this class is significantly helping students advance in today’s technology. It has only been a week and I feel like I have learned A LOT. I know I am not very good at it yet, but comparing to where I started, I have made a noticeable improvement. I believe we should continue working on editing our pages, making them better each day. Students who are more knowledgeable should keep helping those who need help. I believe you should give us a task, such as create a page about yourself, or a page about your friends and see what students can come up with. I also believe this is a great way for communication between students and teachers. As for assignments, not everyone has a computer they can access at any time. Once in a while is ok, but not every time. I think we should come up with topics we can discuss as a class, and have debates. Students can be graded on expressing their opinions.

Hola Mrs. Hannon i think wikis can be used to setup homework assignments for students. When we dont remember the assignments we can come on the computer and get what work we missed. As far as using wikis in the classroom i dont think its nothing else you can do.

I don't know whether to say wikis are a good classroom tool or a bad one. The positive aspects would be that when a teacher is absent classwork can be assigned because we all know how we say "The sub didn't give us any work". However the negative aspects include some websites to edit these pages will be blocked due to the filter which was addressed in an early blog.Another negative aspect is that is if we have to check the wikis at home, not all students have computers let alone the internet, true they can go to the library but most teens our age have jobs or other responsibilities at home that they are unable to go. Well as always I have written more then is needed. See you tomorrow.

Hey Mrs.Hannon,

Wikis are easy to create, but to improve them is a bit confusing for me.Wikis can be used to list assignments from every teacher in the school.Wikis can be used to inform about school events like sports and meetings. This could improve that everyone can reach deadlines for projects or even the sats.I think this will help high school students advance in the real world.

Hey there Mrs. Hannon.

I think that wiki's have there limitations in the classroom. First of all because of filters it's difficult to use the full potential of wiki pages in school. Secondly unless it's English V (or another computer class) it would be a little difficult for some students to access computers all the time. For instance a certian teacher *cough* Mr. Baish *cough* uses a myspace group to post his notes. He doesn't give any notes in class because he puts them on-line and for many that is more than an inconvinience. However I see extreme potential in using wiki pages on a school level. It could be used to post important dates for college admissions and other deadlines. It could also be used to promote school activities, such as dances (which will happen this year!!), fundraisers, and community service projects. It could also get word out about daVinci so that when I tell people what school I go to they don't think that it's a private school.I've also been thinking about using my page as a beginning to a REVOLUTION!! >=0 (it would totally be a positive revolution, like a bloodless coup). That's just a thought though, I'm not sure if it would be my best medium for such an event. I would also like to add that I've learned a ton of stuff in this class so far and I'm happy I ended up in it. This class is already the end to my computer illiteracy. =)

I think there are many other ways wikis can be used in the classroom and in schools. I think one idea is to get some of the teachers to make wikis and then have them post assignments, homework, and other things for students. It would be easier for students this way because then if a student is absent then can easily go on to the teachers wiki and get the assignments they missed that day. Another idea is to post things like when there is a student concil meeting, sport activities, and dances. I think this idea of using wikis is a good idea.

Hello Mrs.Hannon!! I think working on the wikis in the classroom is a very good idea it teaches students to be more technologically advanced. It helps the students interact more with the teacher and with other students. They're a great way of communication and they even teach you things about other students. It's a great experience because everything you do these days somehow can involve a computer. And if you have more computer skills then your more than likely to get things done faster and better. I love the wikis they're amazing. And I must admit at first I was very aggravated because I was starting to figure everything out but know that I got the hang of things Im in love with them.

Hey Mrs Hannon!
Well I think the wiki thing is awsome I love playing with them when I get bored. i think we can use them for our school. Seniors can put one together for open houses. We can just make it for our school like other schools have. Another good idea is that we keep adding on for future projects that we will have in this class. Like make a secial page about your favorite subject (which is of course English because thats the only class that has super cool Mrs Hannon) or favorite sport, but I think the best idea would be where the seniors make one for our school for open houses and we can give the link in the packages we give out.

I think that the wikis are a good idea to help people understand editing web pages and working a computer. But the hard part about working on the wikis in school is that many sites used to edit and add thigs to the pages are currently blocked , so that limits what students can complete.

This whole wiki thing is confusing to me.Is basically a learning process for me.I just basically get on there and fool around with it.So seeming that it's probally new to all of us,we should be learning and teaching eachother how to work better with the wikis.

I think that we can use them to post up the homework or notes from that day for all the different classes. So that waay when people forget what the homework is or, miss a day they can log on to the computer and get everything they missed that way yuo dont have to make it up or fall behind.I think this will be easier for everyone, that way the teacher doesent have to worry about giving the work to some one who was absent and the students dont have to worry about getting it.

Hey, I don't really know what to say about wikis. Well except for the fact that it seems to be the new myspace for people [it will never be as good of course]. I think wikis are a great idea for us. It helps us to keep up with technology, and since computers are only getting better and better we should know how to use them to our advantage. Making wikis helps people to understand simple web pages and HTML and other good stuff that we might need to know in our future. I'm not quite sure about other ways to use them in the classrom other than meeting people and maybe getting our school known.

Sup Mrs.Hannon,
I think we can use the wiki's and bloggs to help teach each other how to use this and similar software (i.e. myspace, websites). This can also help the class get to kno each other more. Even though we have been going to the same school for the passed three years, Alot ofus still don't know that much about our classmates outside of our own groups. This would give us an excuse to learn more about each other and see each others strengths and weaknesses in this type of field.

Hey Mrs. Hannon, I can't lie computers really aren't my thing but I think wikis and other such online blogs can be very useful. Wikis can be used for education, like posting a lesson plan when you can't be in class yourself. They can also be used for extra tudoring and such. Basically, wikis and similar tools may soon replace the need for summer school. I really don't know, I'm an entertainer, not a techological wiz, thats just my thouhts on the matter.

I think wikis are a great way to post upcoming events, deadlines for scholarships, college open houses, and future events in general. They are also a funw ay to get to know the person whose wiki you are at. But I do believe that some personal things should be prohibited.

I think that we could use our wiki's as a tool for open house for our school. When we have an open house we can tell the people how you can make safe web pages that are also school related. We also could use it to post the different activities and or sports events coming up this year. It is a bit frustrating at times but once you get the hang of it it isnt too bad.
