What do you think about the cell phone policy? Can you think of any reasons why cell phones should be allowed in school? What problems could arise if all students were allowed to use their cell phones in schools?
I am personally on the fence about the cell phone policy. While I would LIKE to carry my cell phone, I can understand why we shouldn't. After all, if you got into an arguement with someone, they could call somebody to come to your school to come and beat you up. Or, you could cause other sorts of trouble. If you have a really nice phone and somebody found out, they might want to steal it, it would become much easier to steal if it's not safely in your locker. However, I feel as a senior in high school, that if at one time, I was not feeling well, I should be able to call home on my own, instead of having to go to the office to call home. If the office has to find out you are leaving early anyway, what harm does using your own phone cause?
The cell phone policy is a touchy subject with alot of students. I got my phone taken away last year and I thought it was very stupid. I think students should be able to use their phones for emergencies only. My mother called me while I was in school last year and I was very nervous about what she wanted to tell me. So I was distracted the entire day thinking about it. In a completely different opinion...people text message during school because school is so boring. If we we're up doing things or doing something else, we would not have the time to send texts.
I can definately understand not using cell phones during tests and quizzes though. People would cheat all the time. When people are using thier phones to text during classes, they get very distracted and don't understand half of what the teacher is saying.
I guess that's all I have to say for now. Peace out Mrs. Hannon ♥ Crystal
I feel that the cell phone policy is unfair but also something that should be enforced. I feel that if there was no policy, that many students would abuse the privalge and become distracted. If students were able to use there phone while in school then many students would be distruptive and uncooperative. I also feel that students should be able to have there cell phones on them, just in case of an emergency. Students should be allowed to have their cellphones just in case somthing happened in the familiy and your familiy needs to get a hold of you or even if an event like September 11th happened again, students would have no ability to contact parents to inform them on their condition if their cellphones are in their locker buring! Thats just my opinion!
Hello everyone! Joe is a loser and so is Kelly. I think the cell phone policy is better this year then it was last year. Last year the cell phones were sent downtown on the first offense, which was a bit harsh for a first time offense. So i agree with the policy they have in place this year. I don't believe there is a good reason to allow cell phones in school. I mean it doesn't benefit the learning process or help any of the students in any way. If students were to be allowed to have phones in school we would pay attention a lot less than we already do. This would annoy the teachers and the students who were trying to learn. Ok this is all I have for now.
The new cell phone policy is understandable, but I think it's dumb to advise children not to bring their phone to school at all. Having a cell phone with you offers a sort of protection and convienince. Sometimes after school studnets travel alone to go home. This could be dangerous, especially for younger students such as freshmen. Many feshmen are little and are targets for kidnappers, even older students can be targets for kidnappers. It also is helpful if a student gets lost on their way home from school or an extra-curricular. Sometimes students end up far away from home when they are on a sports team or doing something else with school.
Problems come when students begin to use their cell phones in class. Texting really isn't the end of the world. It's not very disruptive, it just distracts the student from their work. Sometimes this could effect their grade, but sometimes there is no effect at all. I guess students could cheat with their phones too, but even if you eliminate cell phones you won't eliminate cheating. Talking on their phone in class would be a problem though.
Cell phones in schools have actually saved lives. I heard a story on the news last year about how a student was having heart problems and the teacher couldn't help, so a student used his phone to call an ambulance. The ambulance arrived on time to save the student.
The punishment is fair I suppose. At least it is for the first offence. A detention and phone confiscation is fair. The confinscation for a month and a phone going downtown is a bit ridiculus. Some people just buy a new phone when it goes downtown because it's too difficult for their parents to go get it. Buying a new phone to some is the better option compared to waiting a month to get it back.
I think cellphones should be allowed as far as home emergencies.Like if a parent needed something with there child and needed to get in touch but they could always call the school.I personally don't think they should be allowed at all. Cellphones would only cause problems if they were allowed. For instance people could call other people up to schools for fight relations. So it should be left as is NO CELLPHONES IN SCHOOL!!!!!!!!!!!
Well I can understand why there are no cell phones allowed in school but being a big cell phone user I am against the policy. All students would love to be able to use their phones in school and can think of a million and and one reason on why we should be able to: Im sick, I have to call my mom and tell her I have detention.... and so many other reasons. But I am willing to admit that cell phones can be a HUGE distraction. If there was no cell phone policy then no students would ever pay attention and it would make cheating so common. I think that we should be able to use our cell phones in study halls and in lunch.
Hey Ms.Hannon, I think that the cell phone policy is stupid. I think that cell phones should be permitted in the classroom. There are times that when someone needs an emergency number that they don't know off hand and that isn't in their file because it's an alternate one. If cell phones were allowed in class though it might cause a distraction from work because some people would be doing other things with it. If things were to get changed they should lessen the boundaries on how to take care of it.
While I love my cell phone would like to carry it around school grounds i understand why reason for not letting students carry cell phones because of the distraction they can cause. However I remember going to the office asking to call my parents because I needed something and hearing them tell me I couldnt, I feel students have no choice but to use them.

I do not think Cell Phones should be used in school. They are a distraction and do not what is so important that it can't wait untill after school? However they shoul be allowed IN school. The policy "If I see I take it" is out of date. I mean, who doesn't have a cell phone? In a world were technology changes all the time it is important to stay current and up to date. So has the times change the rules should also adapt

I think it's a good thing that there are no cell phones in the classroom. Cell phones are a distraction. When I first got my cell I was texting all the time in class. I wasn't paying attention to the teacher. Then I didn't what we were learning and/or missed alot of important information. It is also hard for the teachers. It's hard to teach someone that doesn't payattention. It's also a security issue. Of we carried our cell phones around there will be alot more thieving of phones. Also people would be calling their parents to come pick them up or bring them something. And the office would be unaware that these parents are coming. If you don't feel well you could just go to the office and call our parents so the office can know that you are going to get picked up.
I am not sure about the cell phone policy because it can go either way. If there is an emergency in the house hold or a major personal problem then i would think that cell phones should be allowed but no one ould pay attention and the cell phone ringing would be a huge distraction to people who are trying to learn and people would text each other and not pay attention in class. It is a fighting issue that the students have lost. mike
I think the new policy on cell phones is absolutely ridiculous. I don't mind having to leave my cell phone in my locker; I don't use it much anyways. The only reason I own a cell phone is for emergency purposes anyways. However, I think it is unfair for the administration to discourage us from carrying them with us. What if something goes wrong in school, such as a fire for example, or God forbid even another Columbine situation? How would we be able to immediately notify our parents that we are all right, or call the police if it's needed? Being able to carry our cell phones with us should be a right; it's a good thing to have for safety purposes.
I also think that the punishment for being caught with a cell phone is unfair. The school shouldn't be able to take our phones away from us. Our phones are our personal, expensive property, and I don't like it that a staff member can take it away from us for 10 days. We need our cell phones for personal issues.
I am not quite sure what I think about the cell phone policy. I mean they have some good arguments on why cell phones should not be allowed in school. Like the infamous text messaging. Texting could be a way for kids to cheat on tests/exams ect. Cell phones would also be a distraction to students. There is also the problem of getting your cell phone stolen. Of course everybody would like to carry around their cell phone, but the only argument us high school students actually have would be that of getting sick and wanting to call home, or a family emergency.
BUT SERIOUSLY.. I really don't even know why we have a policy anyway, do they actually think it's stopping us from bringing our cell phone to school??????
I believe that the cell phone policey has its advantages and disadvantages. I believe that kids should be allowed to have there cell phones on them just in case of an emergency and it is absolutly necessary to use it. In other words if everyone was able to use there cell phones in school no one would pay attention to the teacher and there would be chaos with cell phones going off.
I think that the cell phone policy is a good policy for stundents, but i also think that the intensity of its enforcement is alittle much. Majority of cell phone are bought by parents in case of emergency, so therefore they should allow student to aleast keep them on so that they can be reached. Cell phone can hinder a students learning so i don't think that students should be able to carry them around on their hip...
I am kind of undecided about the cell phone policy but I am leaning more to supporting it. This is because students can use their phones to cheat on test or quizzes. They would also be paying more attention to their phones and not the class they're in. This can cause disruption in the classroom between the teacher and the students and also among the students who are trying to learn.A cell phone could be stollen and this can lead to arguments and fights between the students. If there is a problem or an emergency at home the guardian or parent could come to or call the school so that the student can be noticed
In my opinion cell phones should not be allowed in school.Even though students would love to use their cell phones at school it would bring alot of problems in school and among students.Students might prank call the school and their classrooms while being in the school. This will cause problems in the building and among the staff. If a cell phone rings during class ,students will be interrupted and it will get students aswell as the teacher aggravated.Students will not really focused on their school work but on their cell phone and on who calls. In case of emergency students should go to the main office and use the phone their.if their is an emergency at home then parents should locate their child at school.
Why hasn't anyone addressed the issue of posting pictures on our wikis from cell phones? I don't think the issue should be so much the "calling in an emergency", but more about how the technology of cell phones (pictures, internet access etc.) can help us in the classroom. Don't forget, if there is an emergency at home, your parents know where you are! They will call the school to get in contact with you. Think about the student who may not be able to afford to purchase a computer, but may already have a cell phone with internet access.
I feel that the cell phone policy is understandable but at the same time a little strict.I'm kind of in the middle with this topic because cells phones are a major distraction in school. If they were allowed I don't think that anyone would ever pay attention, because I know that I wouldn't. Instead of paying attention to our studies we would be texting and talking on our phones all day. As Molly stated people are doing these acts now so I really don't see the difference. Cell phones can also be a device used for cheating. Students could use texting and pictures to do such things. Also security reasons. Cell phones could create conflict. It could be used for fighting purposes. Although I somewhat agree with the cell phone policy I'm also against it. For instance cell phones could be used for emergency purposes. If there is a problem or if you are in real danger you could use your phone. Last year when I was sick instead of using my phone I went to the office. Doing that made it ten times worse. I was sent every where but home. At least until somebody finally called my mom. But my point is all that for something that I could've done in a minute. I just say what's really that important that you must say to your friend that you can't tell them after class. I also disagree with the whole students not bring their phones at all. Personally I know that's something that won't happen for me because my mom bought my phone for safety purposes.
I think that the policy is understandable even though many oof us dont agree with it, i see why there worried about us having our phones because of the possability of us cheating and that people might call in frinds from otherplaces to fight other students. But i feel like we should eb able to carry our phines to because if u got to tlk to your parents for an emergency or something this will be easier than them calling the schoool and telling them and then some one has to find the student to tell them a message. So I think the policy should be changed a little but I see why it is the way it is.
Well, i do not own a cell phone but i can completely understand what the schools are saying. the inschool use of cell phones could be very distracitng. I think it would be ok to use your phones in the bathroom or step out to call for and emergency, but not to use in class. Maybe an option during a test the teacher have the kids shut off the phones to prevent cheating but i do think that some adults (mrs. preston cough cough) make way to big of a deal about them. There can be alot of good with them to, like a phone a freind option to use if the teacher or student does not know a anwser. Also i think its much more distracting for the kid if he/she is trying to hide the phone, it takes alot more to hide it then to hve it out in the open. Well i dont know i dont own a phone so rite now im ok with it.
I personaly think that the cell phone policy is very over rated. Its not like its hurting anyone. The only problem it can cause is alot of disruption in class from text messaging.Other than that i feel that cell phones arnt a major problem that we should be focusing on. We have bigger issues to focus on such as violence, higher precentage of students passing ect. and cell phones are the least of our concern. Students at other school's that arnt in the Buffalo Public School system are allowed to use cell phoneds in lunch we cant even do that. Honestly I feel that people purposely use their phones in school just to see how far they can push a teacher or higher authority. The more teachers or anyone else says dont use cell phones in school, the more you see that students are using them. So I feel that its a waste of time telling students not to use cell phones in school, cause i mean who really listens?
I thought I would tell you about this thing I saw on Law and Order. They make ringtones now that only play at a certain frequency, so older people can't hear them. I thought it was funny that you posted that blog because how the students used them so the teachers wouldn't hear their phones ring.
I feel like it is an weird issue i think we should be able to have them in case of emergency and i feel also they will distract us from our work so i dont know. It really is soso. I feel like if we are good students we deserve priveledges and that could be one>
I think the cellphones should be allowed to be carried on the person during school. I think this because some people need their phones on them 24/7 for personal reasons or have family members they need to keep in touch with. I think we should be able to keep our phones on but not use them during school hours unless it is an emergency. Some problems that would occur if people use cellphones during school are abusing the use of the cellphones during school hours. I think that one reason we should have our cellphones on us is incase of emergency for example colombine inscident. People used their cellphones to inform the outside world about what was going on.
What do I think of the cell phone situation?? HHmmm...I think the authorities down town are getting a bit out of control. I understand their trying to avoid fights and jumpings, because it is possible that the people who want to fight will call their friends to help, and it will be a blood bath. But come on! Sending the fones all the way down town is stupid. What if my parents work full time and don't have the extra time to go get my fone back. And for them to prohibit them completely is ridiculous, because if we are at a school fucnction, like prom ,and we get stranded...where is our cell phone??! AT HOME or DOWN TOWN! It's being over done. *1*
I think the cell phone policy is good and bad. If there was no cell phone policy everybody would be texting and making phone calls during classes. If students are using their cell phones during class they will get distracted and this may affect their grades. Another thing is cheating during tests.
Even though the cell phone policy can be a good think it i think that students should be able to carry their cell phones with them throughout the day. I agree with what Kaitlyn said. If there was an emergency in school and we had our cell phones with us we would be able to use them. If their was an emergency outside of school our parents would be able to text or call us to let us know. Students should be able to use their phones in between classes, in study halls, and in lunch. If we aren't doing anything they why aren't we able to use our phones? I think that the cell phone policy should be changed so that we can carry our phones with us and use them when we aren't doing anything.
Hello Mrs. Hannon I'm in the middle with this whole Cell Phone Policy. I dissagree with the cell phone policy because I love my cell phone and I would prefer to not keep it in my locker because I always get paranoid that someone can steal it. I also dissagree because if I feel sick I would prefer to text my mother and ask her to come get me because when I'm sick I don't feel like talking let alone walking to the office. And if my parents arnt home the office most likely wont let me call all the different cell phone numbers that my parents have.My brother is in Iraq and there is a large time differance and he's in constant danger. Most of the time that he is allowed online to talk to my family is while I'm in school. Which means that he can contact me through my cell phone. And if he's really depressed and he's thinking dumb thoughts I'm the person he comes to, to help solve his problems so he doesn't do anything stupid. So how am I supposed to feel if I can't use my cell phone to help my brother get through a huge problem an the next thing I know I'm getting a call that my brother is dead. And if I forget a project or a paper it's hard to get to the office right away to call a parent to ask them to bring it to you. I think the cell phone policy is to strict.. But in another way I can see where the Board of Education is coming from. cell phone use could cause distraction in school and problems between some students. Cell phones could distract students from their studies and can spread rumors easily. But those are the only reasons I can think of for why cell phones shouldnt be allowed in school.I honestly don't think that cell phone usage in school isn't that big of a deal Samantha
About cell phones...it's a vey iffy subject to be talking about in school. I think that cell phones should be allowed in school. After reading some of the comments that others left some of them have a strong rebutle. People can call other people to beat someone at anytime you dont need to have a cell phone in school to do that. Yes they can cause problems but so can alot of other things. You should be able to carry your cell phone without getting the shake down and having your locker searched with out notice. It can also help in many ways to. For a very good example if a girl gets her period and she doesn't want to make it obvious one call or text and a parent is here I have a brother who has short term memory loss and it has happened in school before so if something happens to him and my cell phone is in my locker off I will not know and if I drove that day I would need to be in touch with somone. Cell phones are not always used for bad the cell phone policy is way to strict and out of control. If your worried about people being in danger they are in danger in school and at home it don't matter....
I don't know about cell phone policies, because I do't have one, so don't listen to me. HOWEVER, if I could carry a "celli" as J.Lo calls it, I would. In school I would have it on me, and keep it out of sight and on vibrate. In case of an emergency, I could be contacted immediately, mainly because I don't trust anyone else to tell me in good time. People are going to carry cell phones legal or not, so thats the only problem I see, an almost unenforceable rule.
There are different sides to this subject. While some think that we should carry our cell phones others don't. In my opinion the school is partly right in their cell phone policy. I understand that the policy is in place in order to keep us safe. I do think that their approaches are kind of pointless seein as we still carry our cell phones in school.
In a different point, sometimes our parents call us with emergencies. For example last year my stepgrandmother died and I was not able to listen to my voicemail, and the wors part was that I knew what the phone call was about. Im not saying that we should carry our cell phones, but we should be able to use them in emergencies.
I think the cell phone policy is needed but a bit overrated. I really don't believe that your school should have the right to take your phone for that amount of time because in all actuality they are not paying for the bill while the have it. Yes, allowing students to use phones would get out of hand and interfere with the purpose of school however if there is a major emergency and your phone is in your locker in the "off position" your safety is jepordized. One incident that should have opened the eyes of school district officials was Columbine. Need I say more?
I believe the cell phone policy is a good policy, however it is a bit overdone. If students were allowed to use their cell phones in schools, they wouldn’t be able to pay attention in classes and could also cause a lot of problems. On the other hand I don’t think they should take our cell phones away for 30 days and send them downtown. People still have to pay the bill, which includes some parents. I don’t think anyone wants to pay for something they don’t even have. Plus parents don’t have the time to run around downtown and pick up their kids cell phone. I think the authorities should come up with different rules regarding cells phones and a different punishment.
I think if your cell phone is taken for whatever reason you should be able to get it back at the end of the day. The punishment for the first offense should just be one school day. I think ten days is too long, you never know why a person has a cell phone and they just might need it during after school hours. If you don't learn from the first offense then the punishment should be longer. Cell phones should be allowed in school just because they're needed when we get out of school. If students were allowed to use their cell phones in schools there would be chaos. The teachers wouldn't be able to control the students, the students wouldn't listen and no one would learn.
I think while in school we should be able to carry our cell phones instead of leaving them in the locker. People text in school all the time i dont see nothing wrong with that because we sit there most of the day bored. Cell phones should really be used in school for emergencies only. The policy should be changed lets face it,it's too harsh.
I personally am sort of baffled on the whole cell phone policy. I understand why there is a cell phone policy. If cell phones were allowed in school students would get very distracted, grades would go down, teachers would get aggravated. As far as not bringing them to school goes, most teens have their cell phones just in case something goes wrong on their way to school or on their way home from school. They have their cell phones for mostly safety purposes. The main reason that is a good reason is for safety purposes. I understand that the office can call home for you if your not feeling well and I also understand that a parent can just call the school to get to you. But what if it's something personal that you do not want to discuss with the office, why can't you just make that quick personal phone call yourself? I agree with the cell phone policy to an extent but I also worry about the "what if's" if something goes wrong in school and we want to notify our parents right away.
I don't think we should have cell phones in school because it can be a distration in class rooms. If it is an extreme emergency then your parents or somebody can call the school to notify you. I think they are extremely unneeded. People should beable to talk to each other and not have to text each other. If we allowed cell phones in school I think are test grades would be lower than what is expected of us.

I think that the cell phone policy is a bit too much. I think it is ridiculous to get your phone taken away for 10 or 30 days for either chekcing time ( some people carry a cell on them to check time throughout the day) or getting a text mesage which could contain very important information. Like Ms. A. last year she was waiting to hear on a organ transplant for her sister and had her cell to recieve said information. Why is it ok for teachers but not students? What is it that separates us besides say a college education. Everyone at one point or another has had a loved one ill and being able to carry a cell phone could help them recieve information if something goes wrong. Also if a cell is taken away for 30 days that is a months bill and cell phones are not cheap and if it is taken away we ( the student) must pay for something they did not use and I know no one wants to pay for something they shouldn't. My sister got her cell phone taken away last month because when she left the house for school she put it in her purse, when she realized it was in her purse during a study hall she went to turn it off and got it taken away.Since then her main form of connection between me and my mom has been deleted. My mom can no longer call my sister when she is on the metro on her way home from work and so on. This is why I think the policy is too much.
I think that there could be numerous problems if students were aloud to use their cell phones during school hours. First the obvious, violence. If someone has a problem with someone else, all they have to do is call someone up to meet them outside of school to "take care" of the other persons business..Not that I've ever thought to do that...JUST KIDDING MRS HANNON!!!! Other then violence, I think that nobody would pay attention in their classes, because they do have the right to use their phones. In some other cases I believe that there could be good alternatives in using cell phones during school hours. For example if your sick, and need to go home, some people aren't comfortable in using the office phones, because either they are either scared or shy. in my personal opinion I do not think cell phones should be aloud to be used during school hours becuase if they were, I know that I personally would not be paying attention to things like Pythagreon Identity. (Sorry Mrs. Stoler)
I personally think that cell phones should be allowed in school to a certain extent. When the cell phones are becoming a distraction in class, thats when they should be taken away. If someone is trying to contact their parents for an emergency then they should be able to use them without having their phone being taken away. If their phones are taken, they should get there phones back if, and only if, their parents come and get it, not holding it for 10 or 30 days. If their cell phones were really that important then their parents shoul have no problem with coming and picking up their childs cell phone from school.
I think that the new cell phone policy is ridiculous. I agree that cell phones should not be allowed to be used in the classroom, but I think we should at least be able to carry them around with us in the silent position. Even though it has been said that we have the option to contact our parents through office personnel I'm pretty sure i'm not the only student in the school that has a problem telling some person I don't even know what I need to contact my mother or father for. It has also been my experience that the people in the office do not always call your parents when you ask them to.Last year I was really upset with this policy last year when my mother called the school to alert me of a family emergency. She left a message in the office for me to come straight to the hospital, I never received this message. I think that the majority of us as high school students are responsible enough to carry our phones around for emergency use only, but if the superintendant deems us that irresponsible he should at least make sure office personnel are competant enough to give students messages as well as make the initial requested phone calls. And that is all I have to say about that. ~BURRUSS
I think in some cases students should be able to keep their cell phones on them. Some people have family members who are sick and if their parents can't be reached or if that person who is in school has the car, how is the person in trouble going to get help. On the other hand I can understand why the schools don't allow cell phones. They are afraid that the students will cheat on tests, prank call the school, or take embarassing photos of other students. Yeah students still use their cell phones in class but it's in secret if they were allowed to do it out in the open it would disrupt the way class rooms are run. Like last year when people were prank calling the school it made some students annoyed and angry. It was frustrating when the teacher would be teaching and the phone would ring andthey knew it was the students but they couldn't take a chance. I don't think students should be able to have their cell phones with them no matter what the situation .If the schools let certain kids because of their situation it was cause too much controversy between the students that couldn't use their cell phone's.
Sorry I'm responding so late but I think that we should be able to carry our phones. What if there is an energency in the bathroom or something and we cant get to the office in time? Then what do we do? Now I'm not saying that we should talk on them in class but I think that they be allowed to at the, have them in our possesion.
I personally think we should be allow to at least carry our cell phones as long as they are on silence and we are not talkin on them in class. For a example if there were to be a emergence and u need to call home or 911 you will have your cell phone handed. If you think about it cell phones in your locker its kinda dumb beczuse what if a fire brake out are phones are in are locker and there is know way to call home to let our family know we are fine and still safe. I understand why teachers think cell phones should not be on you but you can have the same rules we have not .Like we are not allow on them in class thats find because if you think about it students wouldnt not listen to the teacher so if we carry cell phones on us we just cant use them that way teacher and students win and if a student is on the phone while a teacher is teaching them they should get their phone taken away and that is that
i read thru all the comments above me, there are pros and cons about nearly everything in general. most of the comment i read was about emergency and distractions. In my opinion it's totally unfair when students are not allowed to bring cell phones while teacher are allowed to... some teacher's phones ring during class and distracts students, even worse when some teachers step outside of the class to talk. but who will collect them from teachers?
Are texting the only distraction to our education? ofcourse not! i know we all pass notes >] they can stop 1 but there is a lot more. and besides how did students pass when they r a distraction to school? even if cellphones are collected and the class is boring instead of texting students will just daydream or find something else that entertains them.

Hoping I'm the first comment!

Hannon

Mrs. Hannon,
I personally don't own a cell phone, so I suppose I am not the authority on cell phone use.
NEWSFLASH: People always use their cell phones in class anyways, so having a cell phone in school is nothing new.
I feel that it wouldn't be a big deal to talk on your phone during study hall, but I think the priviledge would be abused.

GREAT TIMES!!!!!!!

Hello Mrs. Hannon
I'm in the middle with this whole Cell Phone Policy.
But those are the only reasons I can think of for why cell phones shouldnt be allowed in school.I honestly don't think that cell phone usage in school isn't that big of a deal
Samantha
I think if your cell phone is taken
for whatever reason you should be able to get it back at the end of the day.
